It has been the Teacher's Day celebration for Mr. Ron Tan (and mine and Calvin's) last Friday. What a bang! There were 2 cakes - a blackforest and champagne flavored splendor. Sorry folks, no cake smashing. Mr. Ron Tan must have been pleased. Keep the class spirit going!

That was Friday.

Today marks the start that all of us are able to catch some rest, sleep a little later and possibly catch up on school work.

It is Sunday.

Many of us will be going overseas, that is cool. Some of us will be staying at home to play Runescape (hey, 2B has an account), or hack Maple Story servers (Yes, Si Hui), or wow me in WoW. Whatever you do, enjoy!

And don't forget to revise the past years assignments and work - the final years papers are coming in just 3 weeks after this vacation. Term 4 only has 5 weeks. That is short.

This includes IP students. DO NOT START TO SLACK.

Post exam

Chee Yang posting here. Decided to talk about some upcoming events



The CA2 exams are finally over. Hope everyone managed to do up to their expectations. If you have, keep it up. If you havent, then work harder next year. However, I guess we still have a lot of important test and dealines coming up so I urge everone to still hang on with a focus state of mind.



We have our EL oral coming up. Some have completed them but for those who havent. Would like to wish you good luck. I suppose Mrs Rama would be partially responsible if the class were to do badly as she had decided to push all this to the last minute. Also, she only explained what picture discussion was after we selected our pictures. So, I hope everone would be able to score well for this exams. Here are some tips from what I recall. Hopefully they will help.

Oral
  • Read confidently, remember to pronounce your words clearly.
  • Try to read ahead of where you are reciting so that you will be prepared if there are any difficult words ahead.
  • Do not point at the words you are reading. It can be a bit distracting for you and the teacher.
  • Posture is important. Remember to sit up straight so that you can project your voice more effectively.
  • Remember to pause appropriately when there is a full stop or a comma. Take frequent breaths so you do not get breathless while reading.

Picture discussion

  • Read in an appropriate sequence. Either from the background to the foregound or from left to right depending on your prefences and the picture.
  • Remember to state your rationale behind why you intepret the picture this way. Do NOT just state your assumptions.
  • Use descriptive words but do not use emotive words.

OPW and geography project due this week. Hope everyone will be able to meet the respective deadlines. But I suggest that everyone remembers to take note of the quality of their work. It should not be merely cut and paste work.

Hope everyone will have a pleasant week ahead. Dont stress yourselves too much.

Today's Table Tennis Women's Olympics was a spectacular learning point for all of us to view.

Business as usual for China- 3-0; a score which had been seen constantly throughout the whole competition. But it cannot be said that we had lost after all - we managed to catch a falling Slippery Silver from South Korea. It was a close battle.

China is far superior to the Singapore team. Looking at the way the game had been played was simply awesome. The star players, namely Li Jia Wei, Feng Tian Wei and Wang Yue Gu were simply agile and stubbornly defensive.

Congratulations to Singapore for its first Olympic medal, though Silver, in 48 years.

And hopefully Le Yuan or Jun Wei (2A) might be on the telly in a few years.

LINEAR GRAPHS

Just for your info:

When the gradient (m) is given, and one of the points in which the line touches (x,y) is stated,
and the equation of the line is required, there is this formulae.

m = y - y1/ x - x1

where m = gradient, x1 and y1 being the coordinates of the point in which the line touches and x and y being x and y..

Geddit?

Eg: Find the eqn of the line which touches a point (3,2) and has a gradient of 3

Sub...

3 = y - 2/x - 3
3x - 9 = y - 2
y = 3x - 7

=)

Another eqn.

When two points in which the line touches are given, (x1,y1), (x2,y2) are given, and the equation of the line is required, there is this formulae.


y - y1/x - x1 = y2 - y1/x2 - x1

Where (x1,y1), (x2,y2) are the points, and x and y being x and y...

eg: Fing the eqn of the line which passes through the points (3,2) and (5,8)

sub...

y - 3/x - 2 = 8 - 2/5 - 3
y - 3/x - 2 = 3
y - 3 = 3x - 6
y = 3x + 3

Hello guys,

Xuan Jie here. I visited Ms Lim yesterday together with Gerald and Cheeyang and we found that we have lots of thing to take note for our maths CA, especially the graph topic (Chapter 8 & 9). Well, these are the things that Ms Lim want us to take note for our exam:

For graph topic:

1) Please revise all the Math worksheets (Worksheet of linear graphs & curve) that Mr Leung and Mr Tan gave us.

2) Please revise the math workbook, worksheet 18-20.

3) Keep practice drawing graphs over the weekends so that you can will to the curve rule.

For other topics:

1)Probability - remember the concepts:

a. Sample space (s)
eg: The possible outcome of a dice
= {1,2,3,4,5,6}
n(s) = 6

b. P(E) = (Number of favourable outcome for Event E)/(Number of possible outcome)
*refer to textbook pg.357 & math 1

2)Simultaneous Linear Equations

a. Elimination and Sublimation,revise your workbook,worksheet and math 1.

3)Volume and Surface Area

a. Learn all the formulas (cone,cylinder...)

b. Pythagoras theoram & similarity,although this topic is not tested, but they are linked to volume and surface area.

Well,let's go back to graph...

Linear graph:

1)y = mx + c

2)To find the equation of a line,
you have to find m and x

3)m=(y1-y2)/(x1-x2)

4)eg.eqns of the line: y=2x + 3
y=-2.5x + 1.5
y=(-5/2)x + 1/1/2 ( sorry that i cnt type fractions...)

DO NOT write: y= (-2/1/2)x + 1/1/2

5) There's 3 solutions to solve simultaneous linear equations.

1st eqn: 1 set of unique eqns>>>x=?,y=?

2nd eqn:no solution>>>gradient is the same for both lines,they are parallel line(parallel line will never meet)

3rd eqn:infinite solution>>>both eqn are the same & line are overlapping


Quadratic graph:

1) Draw the curve in 5 min only! :(
(I know it's tough but no choice...so practice more during the weekends...)

2)Answer the whole graph qns in max 10 min,you can't spend much time on it.

3)Use a combination of french curve and flexible curve to draw the curve,you are encouraged to buy a french curve.

4)Plot 2 pts at a time.(You are encouraged to use french instead of flexible to plot.)
For the turning pt,use flexible to plot 3 pt at a time.

5)Use the rough edge of the flexible curve & the outerside to draw the curve.

6)Scale is not neeeded if it is given. If the scale is not given, the scale should be written on the top right hand corner of the graph paper.

7)Table might not be necessary if it is given all the values. Also,draw it outside the gridbox or behind the graph paper after drawing the curve.

8) If the question ask "calculate a and b in the table'', no table is needed while drawing the graph unless the qn tell you to do so.

9) Always state the equation of curve on the curve itself.

10) Use dotted lines to answer qns from the graph

11) Use a straight line to indicate the line of symmetry(x=?),no line is needed if the line of symmetry is on the y axis(0,0).

12) When answering the qns for the graph(when y=2,find x...), always use the value on the graph eventhough it may not be accurate,do not use cross algorithm to solve the qns.

13)eg qn.: find the solutions of 4x^2-4x-15=0(workbook worksheet 20 qn 3)

>Do not use cross algorithm
>Since y-axis is 0, use the value of x-intercept from the graph(2 pts on the x-axis)

14)Presentation

eg.coordinates of turning pt=(2,1)>>>must put the brackets!!!
If qns ask for the coordinates of A,B,C in the graph(refer to workbook,worksheet 20 qn 1)

A(-4,0)
B(2,0)
C(0,-8)

DO NOT write: A=(-4,0)
A is (-4,0)
A=-4,0
A are (-4,0)....
They are all wrong!!!

If the question asks a)find the line of symmetry'

a)x=-1

No need to write x = -1 is the line of symmetry or
line of symmetry = x=-1,wrong presentation.

I will photocopy the notes and distribute it to all of you. I know you have lots of questions in your mind after reading, so you can ask me on Tuesday. I'll go through with you on Tuesday or after the exams, or I'll ask Mr Tan to go through. Please revise your Maths 1, workbook and worksheets as they are extremely IMPORTANT!!! And please practice drawing graphs over the weekends until you have use to it, and remember to buy a french curve for the best of chance.

I know it is very tough for us to strive for this math exam, but still all the best to all... Let us hope that Miss Lim will get well soon and let us thank her for taking the time in passing this message on to us regardless of the circumstances she is facing. She will be back in Term 4 and everything will be fine by that time.

Miss Lim's pointers on how to draw graphs

Yesterday, Miss Lim pointed out the following mistakes when we visited her. So here are the following pointers to take note of.

1)Curve rule

  • Use the rough part of the curve rule. You will notice there is a smooth edge and a rough edge. Use the rough edge to allow smoother lines.
  • When using the curve rule, you form the shape with your flexi curve and use the OUTER part of the flexi curve
  • It is advisable to use a combination of curve rule and the french curve. Use the curve rule for drawing the turning point while using the french curve for the other points. This would speed up your plotting.

I know this may sound confusing. We will try to explain to you all during class.

2)Plotting

  • Your crosses do not have to be so tiny. Miss Lim says that this may make the marker unable to see the crosses once you have drawn the graph.
  • Join the points one at a time. There is NO need to form the curve at one shot. For the maximum point, join three crosses together instead. This would make things less tedious.
  • When the table is given, it is not neccesary to draw it again on your graph paper. It will waste time and may also interfere with your curve.
  • Do NOT draw the curve at any white portion of the graph paper. You will be penalised for that.

3)Answering

  • The line of symmetry must be a full straight line.
  • When they ask you to find the value of y when x is a certain value or vice versa, you would have to show on the where the point is by linking it to the y and x axis with dotted lines. Remember to also write the values of y and x at the side of the y and x axis respectively. Also, do not extend your curve or use the equation to find out the values if it is not in the curve. I think we would also have to explain this in class.
  • When the graph is given with several points marked out with alphabets like A,B and C. Answer like this C (0,9). Not like this C=(0,9), C is/are (0,9) or C 0,9.

There is also one point to take note for the part where you use linear graphs to find out answer for simulatenous linear equations. The three scenarios are as followed

  1. Unit solution. There is one set of solutions for x and y. This means that you can use the point of intersection to find out the answer for the simultaneous linear equations to find out the only set of solutions for x and y in the simultaneous linear equation.
  2. No solution. This occurs when the lines are parallel when the gradient is the same and do not intersect. This means that you cant solve the simultaneous linear equations.
  3. Infinite solution. This occurs when the equations of both lines are exactly the same, causing them to overlap. This means that there is an infinite number of locations where the lines "intersect" and the number of solutions for x and y is infinity.

Miss Lim says she hopes we will be able to pull through this CA paper. She advises all 2B students to keep practising drawing curves to speed up our drawing time as we are only given 40 minutes for the whole paper.
